Why We Do

Access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene is fundamental to human health, dignity, and development. Yet, millions of people in India continue to live without reliable access to clean drinking water, hygienic sanitation facilities, and adequate awareness of hygiene practices. The absence of WASH infrastructure disproportionately affects children, women, and marginalized communities, leading to preventable diseases, school dropouts, and loss of productivity.

Unsafe water and poor sanitation are directly linked to waterborne diseases, malnutrition, stunting, and maternal health risks. Women and girls face additional challenges, including lack of privacy, safety concerns, and barriers to managing menstrual hygiene with dignity. Children miss school due to illness or inadequate sanitation facilities, perpetuating cycles of inequality.

At DUA Foundation, we believe that WASH is not only a health issue but a cornerstone of social equity and human rights. Sustainable WASH solutions require infrastructure, awareness, community ownership, and behavior change to create lasting impact.

What We Do

DUA Foundation works to improve access to safe water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene awareness through integrated, community-led WASH programs. Our approach combines infrastructure development with education and behavior change to ensure long-term adoption and sustainability.

Our WASH initiatives align with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and contribute to health, education, and gender equality outcomes across communities.

Our Interventions

1. Access to Safe Drinking Water

We support the installation and revival of water access systems such as community water points, filtration units, and rainwater harvesting structures. Our interventions prioritize safe, reliable, and locally appropriate solutions.

2. Sanitation Infrastructure Development

DUA Foundation works to improve sanitation through the construction and upgrading of toilets in communities, schools, and public spaces. Emphasis is placed on privacy, safety, and accessibility, particularly for women, children, and persons with disabilities.

3. Hygiene Awareness & Behavior Change

Infrastructure alone is not sufficient without awareness. We conduct hygiene education sessions focusing on handwashing, safe water storage, menstrual hygiene management, and sanitation practices to reduce disease transmission.

4. Menstrual Health & Dignity

Menstrual hygiene remains a neglected issue. Our programs promote awareness, access to safe menstrual products, and supportive environments that enable girls and women to manage menstruation with dignity and confidence.

5. School WASH Programs

We work with schools to create child-friendly WASH facilities and hygiene education initiatives. Improved school WASH leads to better attendance, reduced illness, and enhanced learning outcomes, especially for adolescent girls.

6. Community Ownership & Sustainability

We engage communities in planning, implementation, and maintenance of WASH infrastructure. Local ownership ensures sustainability, accountability, and long-term behavioral change.

Our Focus

DUA Foundation prioritizes WASH interventions for:

  • Rural and peri-urban communities with limited water access
  • Urban informal settlements and migrant populations
  • Government schools and anganwadi centers
  • Women, adolescent girls, and children

Our programs are designed to be inclusive, culturally sensitive, and aligned with local needs.

Impact

Our WASH initiatives aim to create measurable health, social, and educational outcomes.

Key impact outcomes include:

  • Improved access to safe drinking water
  • Reduction in waterborne diseases and hygiene-related illnesses
  • Increased school attendance and retention, especially for girls
  • Improved menstrual health management and dignity
  • Strengthened community awareness and ownership of WASH practices

We measure impact through health indicators, infrastructure usage, behavioral assessments, and community feedback.

Reach & Presence

DUA Foundation implements WASH programs across:

  • Rural and water-stressed regions
  • Urban informal settlements
  • Schools, anganwadis, and community spaces

Our delivery model includes:

  • Community engagement and mobilization
